The day after Labor Day, all our local stores had their Halloween items on display- two full months before Halloween. I know the common reaction from people is to think it is too soon, but the store marketers know exactly when to put things on display for maximum sales. They put the holiday items out 2 months before the holiday because that's when people buy it.
In the olden days before social media, holiday decorations went up in homes about 2 weeks before the holiday. Times have changed! People start decorating one month before a holiday now so they can post all their photos on social media, which starts a chain reaction of needing to keep up with the people you do not really know, but it looks like they have perfect lives.
If you sell anything holiday related, the schedule the major stores use should be something you pay close attention to--especially if you sell mostly online and shipping time is a factor. If you wait until December 1st to start advertising your Christmas goods, you are going to be too late. If you are selling Hanukkah items, you need to start even sooner.
Hanukkah starts December 2nd this year. People have already started buying
Christmas and
Hanukkah cards from me and it is early September.
Start promoting your Halloween goods in September, your Thanksgiving goods in October, and your Christmas and Hanukkah goods in November. As soon as Christmas and New Year are over, Valentine's Day it is! Use the major store displays as your marketing calendar- it's like free advice from a marketing wizard!
